Anyone who knows me, knows there are two things I hate: waking up early, and the cold. And yet today I set my alarm for 7:00am (don’t laugh, that’s early for me), made some coffee, and set off on my bike in -10 degrees for the nearest QEW overpass.
What made me do such a crazy thing in January in Canada? Well, in case you haven’t heard, a massive convoy of truckers and supporters is headed from all points in Canada to Ottawa, to protest not only the vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers (which threatens to severely disrupt the supply chain), but ALL illegal mandates and restrictions that Canadians have been subject to over the past two years.
I couldn’t not be there. The southern contingent was scheduled to set off from Fort Erie this morning, and nothing was going to stop me getting to an overpass to wave them on.
I arrived at about 10 minutes to 8, and already a sizeable group had gathered.
As the sun continued to come up on the eastern horizon, more and more trickled in until the bridge was full and people had to stand on the banks on either side.
They were old and young, grandparents and kids. They wore toques and parkas and mittens and clutched Timmies cups. They waved Canadian flags and hung homemade signs over the guardrail. They were good, God-fearing, freedom-loving, working-class, salt-of-the-earth Canadians that the elites in Ottawa probably think of as “deplorables”. They’re the best people we have.
Long before the convoy appeared, we got steady honks and waves of support from vehicles passing by both on the highway below and the street behind us. So much for Trudeau’s “fringe minority”.
At about quarter after 9, the first convoy vehicles appeared on the horizon. Big rigs and pickup trucks and cars, festooned with Canadian flags, a couple of American flags, some “don’t tread on me flags”, flags that say something impolite about our beloved Prime Minister, signs and slogans. They honked and waved and flashed their lights and we waved back. It was glorious. It finally feels like Canada is waking up and rising up.

I pray for their peaceful success. But no matter what happens, something beautiful has started. Canadians are uniting as one to stand up and say, no more. Enough is enough. We are free, peaceful people who want our lives back. We don’t want to take any more life-destroying orders from elites who couldn’t care less about us. We reject your Great Reset, your Build Back Better, your smug and smarmy plans to rule over us and profit off our suffering. We are the people. We are the Truth North strong and free.
God bless Canada.
Oh and I could gently tease you about the 7am time but I whine just a wee bit about that too. I’m proud of you for getting up and cheering them on!!!! Texas knows nothing about frigid weather. But we could educate you in the summer about the opposite. I love you Canadians for cheering in -10!!!! Is that Celsius or Fahrenheit?
I’m just crying watching the videos on Twitter. We Americans might have mustered 50,000 maybe. Did you see Ottawa? I’m proud of all of them. You Canadians rock. And the truckers messages of peaceful protest was .... it just was inspiring. Hold them Lord, make your peace their peace. May they look to you for strength. May all of Ottawa support them. In -10 degrees, keep them ALL safe.
How do you guys manage in that constant cold?
Did you see the Russian immigrant lady calling the media guy a liar? If you see her hug her neck she was sweet and forceful all at the same time.
